1、单选题:
Recognizing the Summary: For the following paragraph, choose the summary you think is the best.
Sociolinguistics is concerned with the ethnography of speaking, that is, with cultural and subcultural patterns of speech variation in different social contexts. The sociolinguist might ask, for example, what kinds of things one talks about in casual conversations with a stranger. A foreigner may know English vocabulary and grammar well but may not know that one typically chats with a stranger about the weather or where one comes from, and not about what one ate that day or how much money one earns. A foreigner may be familiar with much of the culture of a North American city, but if that person divulges the real state of his or her health and feelings to the first person who says, “How are you?” he or she has much to learn about “small talk” in North American English. Similarly, North Americans tend to get confused in societies where greetings are quite different from ours. People in some other societies may ask a greeting, “Where are you going?” or “What are you cooking?” Some Americans may think such questions are rude; others may try to answer in excruciating detail, not realizing that only vague answers are expected, just as we don’t really expect a detailed answer when we ask people “How are you?”         (qtd. from Judith Resnick & Lanny Lester, Text & Thought, pp. 194-195)
A:Conversation differs around the world.
B:North Americans may not respond appropriately to greetings in other societies.
C:Sociolinguists are interested in how speech is used in different cultures and different social contexts, such as in making small talk and greeting people.
D:A foreigner may be familiar with the English language but not with the appropriate topics for making small talk.
答案: 【Sociolinguists are interested in how speech is used in different cultures and different social contexts, such as in making small talk and greeting people. 】

5、单选题:
Read the following paragraph
The most depressing thing about an illness is the sense of being left out or brushed aside by it from the mainstream of living. When a person is ill, he cannot keep up with the world of healthy people. Life begins to occur without him. Even language seems to change. What is said to a sick person does not involve him, and therefore he begins to interpret it differently. He loses touch with the outer, healthy world. His sense of isolation is increased rather than lessened by the regular visits of the doctor. The doctor labels the sick person’s disease and confines him to his special place. With tact and skill, the doctor completes the patient’s helplessness and makes final his division from the world of strong arms, sound legs, clear skin, and lungs that breathe deeply. The sick person’s only hope is to return to life again, and he clings to the thought of getting well.       (qtd. from Kathleen E. Sullivan, Paragraph Practice, p.125)

Exporting American Culture: Disneyland in Japan and France     Since its opening in 1955, Disneyland has been viewed as an important part of American popular culture. One critic notes, “America’s two enduring gifts to modern civilized life are its music, based on black culture, and Walt Disney” (Pilger 10). Building on the tradition of worlds’ fairs, Disney is credited with “developing the prototype of a technologically advanced, immensely entertaining, and commercially feasible amusement park in contemporary society” (Weinstein 147). According to one scholar, Disneyland’s success is due to its ability to reflect and reinforce “America’s most important beliefs, values, ideals, and symbols” (Weinstein 151).

第六章 单元测试
1、单选题:
Read the beginning of a student’s proposal essay
The Athlete on the Sidelines
It’s midseason in cheer nation. This winter, thousands of girls will travel on college all-star teams to take part in competitions across the country. Practicing more than 20 hours a week, they will refine a routine of back flips, hansprings, round-offs and splits—all perfectly synchronized and timed to an Olympic second. Their goal: first place. Their game: competitive cheerleading, one of the fastest-growing sports for women in America.     For too many years, cheerleading has been the subject of derision. Sports Illustrated has lampooned it. Many Americans fail to distinguish it from the sideline shows the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders put on. Back when I was a cheerleader in high school in the late 70s, we were called a sideshow. In those days, we performed at every sporting event—football, basketball and baseball. … As in most proposal arguments, the student’s first task is to convince readers that a problem exists. She has to persuade readers to take competitive cheerleading seriously and to show them why it is problematic for competitive cheerleaders not to be granted varsity sports status.

1.One-sided argument    B. Two-sided argument
Topic: A person’s worth nowadays seems to be judged according to social status and material possessions. Old-fashioned values, such as honour, kindness and trust, no longer seem important.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?      Given the power and influence of the super rich, it might seem as if social status and material possessions are the new symbols of personal worth, but in everyday life I do not think this is true.     It is apparent that most celebrities today are admired or envied solely for their material wealth or position in various social hierarchies. Many of these people are known to turn their backs on friends, cheat on their spouses or spend their evenings over-indulging in alcohol and/or drugs. Things like owning a mansion, driving an expensive car and getting into A-list parties are exalted above old-fashioned values. Ultimately, though, it is the many readers of gossip magazines and celebrity blogs who reinforce these ideas.     Nevertheless, I do believe that in their day-to-day lives most people still believe in values such as honor, kindness and trust. In some way most of us want to form loving families, raise our children to be good citizens, stand up for the downtrodden and protect our communities from harm. We still form friendships, romances and business partnerships based on old-fashioned criteria. When our trust is abused or we are unfairly treated, we see that as a major violation of our relationship and we judge the wrongdoer accordingly.     In conclusion, I believe there is some truth to the notion that status and possessions have superseded old-fashioned values as a measure of a person’s worth. Looking beyond the tabloids, however, it is apparent that most ordinary people have still preserved an old-fashioned conscience.

第九章 单元测试
1、单选题:
Read the beginning of a student essay and identify which of the four organizational patterns the student used in writing.

Class, Mobility, and the Lai Family in Three Societies     In “Social Mobility in Industrial Society”, Lipset and Bendix describe and explain mobility in social terms and go on to analyze the importance of mobility opportunities to the well-being and stability of a society. They see a balance in every society between the tendency of those who have wealth and power to keep these things for themselves and their relatives and the society’s need for new talents, skills, and energy. When power and wealth are held too tightly by closed classes, the society becomes stagnant and those without wealth and power may become so disenchanted that they may pose a revolutionary threat to the social order. My family’s experience and my own personal experience in three different societies show exactly the kinds of differences Lipset and Bendix describe, with precisely the political consequences they predict. The pattern used in the essay is most probably _____.

第十一章 单元测试
1、单选题:
Identify the main idea of the following paragraph and make the revision of it.
According to Rachel Jones, Assistant Director of Housing Service, the initial purchase and installation of carpeting would cost $300 per room. Considering the number of rooms in the three residence halls, carpeting amounts to a substantial investment. Additionally, once the carpets are installed, the university would need to maintain them through the purchase of more vacuum cleaners and shampoo machines. This money would be better spent on other dorm improvements that would benefit more residents, such as expanded kitchen facilities and improved recreational space. Thus carpets would be too expensive.
